Surprisingly, the market is taking a major turn toward the crossover classes available out there. There aren’t nearly as many sedans being sold as there used to, but those that still are are clearly the best of the best. For instance, the Mazda6 midsize sedan. The midsize sedan segment might be the most popular among the sedan classes these days, and so there is still plenty of competition within it. We thought we’d see how the 2019 Mazda6 fares against one of its biggest competitors by pitting it against the 2019 Ford Fusion.
The Mazda6 sedan has been around since 2002. It was redesigned for the first time in 2007, then entered its third generation in 2012. Just last year it went through a mid-generation facelift, so the current Mazda6 is still quite fresh!

It doesn’t take long to realize just how similar these two vehicles are to one another by looking at the table up above. Even still, each sedan has its own advantages, so let’s dive a little deeper into them. The first specification we looked at was, of course, horsepower. The Mazda6 gets the first leg up by delivering an extra 14 horsepower, which isn’t a lot but will offer a clear advantage.
Although sometimes extra power has an adverse effect on fuel economy, that’s not the case here as the second row shows the Mazda6 also achieves an extra 4 miles per gallon combined than the Fusion. The Ford sedan’s only reprieve comes in the third row, where we see it offers a slightly larger trunk in the form of 1.3 cubic feet of space. The final row shows that they both offer the same amount of seating.
If you can look past the slight deficit in trunk space, then you’ll be opting for a more powerful and efficient option in the 2019 Mazda6. Be sure to get in touch with us if you think that’s the route you’d like to go!
